We have some exciting news to share! Winnie, pictured here, is a six year old Golden Retriever and certified Therapy Dog, who will be spending some time at Nottingham School. Winnie belongs to Mrs. Wheeler, one of our School Counselors, and the two of them work together as a certified Therapy Team. Winnie has spent time volunteering in a variety of settings , and he is a gentle and calm boy that encourages everyone he encounters to “Wag more, worry less”. Winnie and Mrs. Wheeler are certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and have extensive training and testing to ensure the safety and therapeutic needs of the children and adults that they encounter in their work together.
Therapy dogs have a proven positive effect on student and staff well-being and are a perfect compliment to our social emotional learning efforts at Nottingham School. Therapy dogs are not the same thing as service animals. Therapy dogs are trained with their owner to provide emotional support for staff and students alike. Research has shown that therapy dogs support psychological and academic growth while increasing social skills and self-esteem in children. The benefits are numerous, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to our Nottingham students and staff.
Winnie will be spending time at Nottingham School interacting with students and staff utilizing a therapeutic schedule to visit classrooms and other areas of the building. We want to be respectful of any needs that your child may have, such as allergies or a fear of dogs. Please email Mr. Sousa, or Mrs. Wheeler with any questions or concerns regarding Winnie’s interactions with your child. We look forward to welcoming Winnie at Nottingham School!
