Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back for the 2012-2013 school year.  Reading focuses on various literary genres as well as literary elements such as plot, character, and theme.  We will also be connecting what we read to ourselves and the world.  It is writing-intensive and projects are often completed in conjunction with the writing class. Below is a list of expectations and guidelines for you and your student to review.

Social Studies focuses on how various cultures, societies, and groups interact with each other.  This year we will be focusing on US Studies.   Below is a list of expectations and guidelines for you and your student to review.

This year students will be required to have a sturdy pocket folder in which important worksheets and notes will be kept.  Students will also be required to have two one subject notebooks specifically for Reading and Social Studies.  It is important that students come prepared with all necessary materials for class (ex: pens, pencils, colored pencils, homework/class work, materials that are being read or utilized).

Please contact with me with any questions or concerns regarding the information below.  Additionally, if there is any information that you feel that I should know about your student please indicate that information by contacting me by phone or email.  I am looking forward a wonderful and exciting year ahead.

HUMANITIES CLASSROOM POLICIES

Late Work Policy:

  • Projects are required to be completed on the due date.

1.      Students can turn projects in late, however, a point deduction will be made for each day it is late.

  • Homework/Class Work is required to be completed for the day it is due. (Possible Exception: a longer assignment with a date provided by me) for full credit.  If a student forgets his/her homework in his/her locker it will be counted as late.  Students may turn in homework/class work late for a 50%.  However, after a unit has come to an end, students will not have the option to make-up the missing assignments and the grade will be a zero.

Exams, Projects, & Quizzes:

  • Apply your best effort and study skills here.  You will not get a second chance!  Tests and quizzes are announced at least one week before the date the assessment is give.  Students are expected to be prepared for the day of a quiz or test regardless of whether or not they were absent the day before.

Make-Up Work:

  • Students are responsible for getting and completing their work when he/she is absent.  This includes class assignments, written papers, and homework.  I will not chase you down!  .  Students will receive the number of days they were out to complete the assignments.

Participation:

  • This aspect is very important.  Class and small group discussions allow students to talk about what they have learned and get answers to questions that they have.

Grading:

This is how it works!

Tests/Projects                        45%

Quizzes                                  25%
